Open Call for Canadian Work

Open to Canadian composers up to the age of 35 as of May 1, 2011

Deadline for submissions: Friday, November 4, 2010

The Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra (TSYO), TSYO Conductor Alain Trudel and the TSYO Faculty are inviting young Canadian composers to submit a work for possible inclusion in the TSY0 2010/2011 Spring Term. The TSYO is a high level orchestral training programme for talented musicians aged 22 and under, and is regarded as one of the top youth orchestras in North America.

Submissions should be 5-7 minutes in length and should not exceed the following instrumentation: 2 3 2 2 / 4 2 3 1 / timpani + 2 / strings.

Composers should take into account the placement of their work within the following programme:

  • Gershwin: An American in Paris
  • Open Call for Canadian Work [TBA]
  • Copland: excerpts from Old American Songs
  • Dvorak: Symphony No.9, Op.95, E minor (From the New World)

Compositions should be submitted anonymously, with a pseudonym on the score, and the composer’s name in a separate sealed envelope. The composer’s pseudonym should be clearly marked on the outside of the envelope. In order to be considered, works must include the following:

  • Instrumentation list (including a percussion list)
  • Duration of piece
  • Indication of whether the score is transposing or at concert pitch

Parts are the responsibility of the composer and must be provided in compliance with the needs of the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra’s library. Scores will be reviewed by TSYO Conductor Alain Trudel and the TSYO Faculty. Submitted scores become property of the TSYO. The composer of the selected work will receive a $500 honorarium, and an archival recording of the performance.
