The Toronto Symphony Orchestra Announces the 2010.2011 Desjardins Young People’s Concert Series

Toronto January 27, 2010 - The 2010.2011 Desjardins Young People’s Concerts series includes concerts that are sure to thrill and inspire the young and old alike! The Young People’s Concerts are a series of five one-hour performances designed for audience members aged 5 to 12. These concerts take place on five Saturday afternoons. Performances are at 1:30pm and 3:30pm.

To celebrate Hallowe’en, the Magic Circle Mime Company will be joining the Toronto Symphony Orchestra for a special concert of Phantoms of the Orchestra (October 23, 2010), featuring the story of the Sorcerer’s Apprentice. Parents and kids are encouraged to come in costume!

Guest conductor Nicholas McGegan will introduce the audience to TSO musicians in the Meet the Orchestra concert (November 27, 2010). The programme includes Vivaldi’s spectacular Concerto for Four Violins played by members of the TSO’s outstanding violin section.

Celebrate the holiday season with the TSO in the annual Family Christmas Concert. The TSO performs The Bear© (December 12, 2010), an animated film from the creators of The Snowman. The concert features a free intermission art activity in partnership with the Avenue Road Arts School where kids can unleash their inner artist with themed activities and the popular “graffiti wall”!

In the enduring classic How the Gimquat Found Her Song (February 5, 2011), the TSO and Platypus Theatre take the audience on an enchanting journey through the history of classical music as the Gimquat searches for a perfect song. An accompanying award winning DVD and Study Guide are available for purchase to enjoy at home or to share with your school.

Every year, the Young People’s Concerts series includes a concert featuring young people themselves. Kids are sure to be inspired as they watch and listen to the musicians of the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra and the Toronto Children’s Chorus as they perform music by popular American composer Aaron Copland (April 16, 2011).

Celebrate spring with the TSO in a concert of Bugs, Birds & Butterflies! (May 14, 2011) This concert pays tribute to our many winged friends with selections such as the Flight of the Bumblebee and the relentless buzz of Dance of the Mosquito. Conducted by John Morris Russell, the audience will be taken on a memorable flight without ever leaving the concert hall.

Before each concert, the audience is invited to join the fun in the North Lobby for 20 minute pre-concert performances that often feature TSO musicians and local guest artists as a special treat to get everyone excited for the upcoming performance.

Families can learn more about the concert programme prior to their arrival by tuning into tso.ca/podcasts and downloading the fun, fast, and informative podcasts produced by the TSO’s Education Team!

The Young People’s Concerts series is proudly sponsored by Desjardins Group.
